Cultural Object Panel for Metadata Management

Developing a universal open source Cultural Object Metadata Schema that can accommodate datasets for the Museum and archaeological community in Africa.

KwaZulu-Natal Museum Services in the Department of Arts & Culture has developed an open source Cultural Object Metadata Schema/tools to streamline its cultural object management for Museum artefacts. Museum Services have partnered with the Visual Resources Association (VRA) – Embedded Metadata Working Group) to develop a metadata schema that can accommodate data in the Museum and archaeological community. The EMWG is based at the University of California, San Diego and lead by Greg Reser, striving to advance the preservation and research of embedded cultural metadata.

The Cultural Object Panel plugins for Adobe Bridge, which focuses on fields applicable data for images of artwork and other physical objects, such as artefacts, historical monuments and manuscripts.

The KZNMS was developed to create a practical solution, attempting to standardise the metadata workflow in KwaZulu-Natal museums. It is envisaged that the KZNMS metadata tools will produce a starting point for the Cultural Heritage community to develop a universal Cultural Object metadata Schema for South Africa.

The KZNMS was developed under an open source agreement with the VRA-EMWG, making all developments and tools freely available and accessible to non-commercial heritage stakeholders in Africa.

The necessity for such a schema arose from the KwaZulu-Natal Heritage Preservation Initiative (www.kznheritage.org) that the Department of Arts & Culture launched in 2015 to share and preserve the province’s rich heritage with the public and researchers.

The new plugins for Adobe Bridge CC allow people to view the image data, and write into these fields using a simple panel, which has been tailor-made for use in the heritage sector. The panel includes fields for artwork/object attributes, administration, curation and relevant digital image rights.

As part of our current advances in digitisation, Museum Services have developed an Adobe Bridge XMP metadata panels, search tool and import-export tools that can be used for syncing data and audit verification. Rather than creating another independent metadata schema we have opted to build our standard on top of the AFRICOM standard with additional fields added. We have mapped all our fields to existing international schemas, including the IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council), VRA (Visual Resources Association), LIDO (Lightweight Information describing Objects), DCMI (Dublin Core), SPECTRUM (UK Museum Documentation Standard is the UK as well as international standard for Collections Management), MIDAS (UK Historic environment data Standard) and AFRICOM.

Museum Services will make the KZNMS available free of charge on its www.kznhertiage.org website at the beginning of October 2017 at the following link: http://kznheritage.org/kznms

The Cultural Heritage community is encouraged to actively participate in this initiative by submitting feedback and ideas to hartzenbergr@kzndac.gov.za so that we improve and make the KZNMS more inclusive.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please note that this software package (version 1.6) is not compatible with  Adobe Bridge CC 2018 version. Adobe Bridge CC 2018 that was released in October 2017 contains a bug that causes the data to sync incorrectly. Adobe is working on the problem and hopefully, will fix the issue in a future update. Please use Adobe Bridge CC 2015 or 2017 instead.

Latest update: Version 1.6       Released: 2017/11/16
Release Notes: We have added  “Restoration & Conservation Notes” and “Heritage Resources Grading” fields.
