Content Information Prison Graffiti in prison cell no. 40: Cartoons and a hand with thumb up drawn by a Prisoner using a sharp object on the wall-The Old Pietermaritzburg Prison was built in 1862 at 4 Burger Street, and has been associated with several prominent political prisoners. Such as Langalibalele KaMtimkulu, King Dinizulu kaCetshwayo, as well as Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba and his son Manilal were incarcerated at the prison. In more recent times, local political figures and anti-apartheid activists were also held here, including Harry Gwala, Archie Gumede, Peter Brown, Hans Meiden, Derrick Marsh, Moses Mabhida and A.S. Chetty.; This historic building was gutted by fire on 8 December 2016. It is an absolute tragedy for the owners, the city and the country. The building is one of the oldest in Pietermaritzburg (circa 1862) and is a declared heritage site. Many famous political prisoners including Gandhi were held here.
